[barbs] is more effective versus strong single targets.

Minions target foes randomly, so they're not going to follow your calls and specifically attack a target hexed with MoP or Barbs. You're going to want to have other physical dmg types in your party to make better use of those two skills. Also, as a caster, it might be better to take a martial wep to inflict the physical dmg required by the hexes yourself.

Not really. Minions tend to attack whatever the MM targets. Fiends are especially good with targeting because they are ranged.
As for physical types, I wouldn't bet so much on PUGs doing it right so unless you are with good guild members who knows how to synchronize with you, I trust the Fiends targeting more than Pugger's. Or do it with ranged physical heroes/henchies since they synchronize better than PUGs too. All forms of physical damage helps, especially ranged.
You should try it.

Caster spears work well enough; I wouldn't suggest running in with a sword or any other close range wep as a softy. It's just a way to add another physical attacker to the party.

I usually run with the ranger henchies in most zones.

Minions do not use pet AI. They do not neccessarily attack what their master attacks, and will attack any hostile creature that enters their aggro circle. Similarly, they do not respond to called targets.

As mentioned above, minions don't prioritize targets, so that method would be situational.

I am sure that information is not very accurate since I have observed minions for a long time now. They will generally target what the minion master targets even though they may not follow called targets.
The official wiki is more accurate: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Minion
"Although minions will attack foes in their Danger Zone, they will not attack ones outside this range unless their master attacks a target. Spells will not count as attacks in this regard. "
This means they DO try to target whatever their master attacks with his wand or ranged weapon.

Haven't really tried this, but has anyone considered running MoP in conjunction with a sin using [locusts fury] and an IAS- critical agility?
Lots of triggers there for MoP.

This is incorrect. Minions use a target prioritization system similar to monsters. The master's target is given a weight in deciding what to attack. Use the search and you can find a detailed post be me describing how the minions choose targets.

On the heroes, no, but my necro controls MoP and barbs. Heroes tend not to make good choices for MoP targets anyway.
If I cast Barbs on the MoP target, I find that fiends kill it so fast that the target tend to die before the surrounding monsters are killed through MoP triggering. So now I cast MoP first, trigger it until the surrounding monsters die then cast Barbs to finish that target off.
